Abstract

Background: The study of cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) and their therapeutic abilities is considered one of the challenges in sustainable environmental development. In recent years, human health specialists have turned to studying the properties of natural materials, such as plants used as food and spices, and their ability to improve the body’s immune system or treat infections that do not respond to known antibiotics, Including Antibiotic microbial resistance (AMR). Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum), in all their available forms, have proven their amazing preventive and therapeutic abilities. Aim: This review aims to know the effect of cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) in cases of known pathogenic bacteria, like Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus, Klebsiella, etc., so viruses and fungi that infect different parts of the human body and their effect, whether in powder, oil, or the flowers. Methodology: There are many methods for extracting the different components of the cloves,   such as steam distillation, solvent extraction, hydro distillation, Ultrasound-assisted hydro distillation, supercritical CO₂ extraction, and the cold pressing method. Results: the clove (Syzygium aromaticum) is used in different forms, clove oil, chewing a clove, or using clove powder or decoction. Conclusion: We conclude that cloves are one of the most important natural plant materials that can be used as an antibiotic, as studies have shown that they affect both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, in addition to treating COVID-19, by using clove oil, chewing a clove, or using clove powder or decoction. The human body can also benefit from cloves in treating cases of high blood sugar, gum pain, toothache, digestive system irritation, and other.
