Assessment of Anti Glutamate receptor (GLUR1 Ab) and Interleukin-6 Levels in Patients with Epilepsy in Al-Diwaniyah Governorate

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological condition characterized by recurrent and unprovoked seizures resulting from abnormal electrical activity of the brain. All of them were evaluated within this study in relation to blood IL-6, and anti-glutamate receptor 1 antibody (GluR1 Ab) levels from epileptic patients and controls. A case-control study design was used, the study included all patient referred to the Neurology Center of Al-Diwaniyah Teaching Hospital in Al-Diwaniyah Governorate from a period between November 2025 and March 2026. Fifty controls and fifty epileptic patients were included in the study. Outcomes: All participants had venous blood samples taken. GluR1 Ab and IL-6 were detected in serum with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). SPSS version 26 was used for indicating the results and P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. According to the findings, epilepsy patients had a substantially higher mean blood GLUR1 Ab level than controls (35.29 ± 6.75 vs. 12.17 ± 3.8, P = 0.001). Similarly, patients had substantially higher blood IL-6 levels than controls (252.17 ± 18.61 vs. 175.01 ± 5.69, P < 0.001). In conclusion, individuals with epilepsy have significantly higher levels of both GLUR1 Ab and IL-6, indicating that the immune and inflammatory systems are involved in the disease. Among the markers examined, GLUR1 Ab outperformed IL-6 in terms of discriminatory performance and could be a more useful biomarker for epilepsy.
