The Relationship of miRNA-155 Expression with B-cell activating factor (BAFF) Level in Systemic lupus erythematosus patients

Background: The multisystemic autoimmune illness known as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is typified by autoantibodies against nuclear antigens. miRNA expression upregulation and its function in the immune system. Changes in miRNA-155 expression in B cells, which also contribute to immune system hyperactivity, are linked to the start or remission of SLE.
Objectives: Assessing the amount of miRNA-155 and its association with the cytokine (BAFF) in both healthy controls and SLE patients in order to ascertain their possible application as biomarkers for the diagnosis of the illness.
Methods: In this study, 150 individuals (10 men and 140 females) were split into two groups: 50 healthy controls and 100 SLE patients. Participants ranged in age from 12 to 60 years. Patients were recruited from the Rheumatology Consulting Clinic and the Biological Injection Unit at Marjan Teaching Hospital in Babil Governorate, Iraq.
Results: SLE patients had substantially higher levels of miRNA-155 expression (fold change = 3.36) than the control group (fold change = 0.95), (P = 0.001). Using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), BAFF concentrations in SLE patients were substantially higher (0.62 µg/L) than in the control group (0.38 µg/L) (P = 0.001).
Conclusions: MicroRNA-155 and BAFF have a somewhat favorable connection that advances SLE. Patients with SLE had greater levels of BAFF and miRNA-155 expression, which can be utilized as a predictive biomarker for the activity of the illness. Finally, these results revealed that miRNA-155 and BAFF can be a good diagnostic biomarker for SLE diagnosis.
